Since the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum, warden Quincey Sharp has taken credit for Batman's successful quelling of Joker's uprising and used that momentum to win Gotham City's mayoral election. The first of his broad-sweeping plans is to proclaim Arkham Asylum and Blackgate prison unfit to house criminals. Sharps buys up a large swath of Gotham's slums and walls it off, stocking the perimeter with highly trained armed mercenaries from an outfit named Tyger. All prisoners are transported to this new facility dubbed Arkham City approximately one year after the events at the asylum. They are given only one rule under threat of death: do not try to escape. No other policing takes place inside, leaving a mix of two-bit criminals and super villains to eke out an existence in this lawless, ruthless ecosystem.
[Credit: Game Informer #209; Article - Diving into Darkness, Batman: Arkham City, by Bryan Vore]

Arkham City is only loosely based on the game of the same name. Seeing as the game isn't even out yet, that's a given. If you want to explore character development in a lawless society, then you're in the right place.

    Arkham City...
Is chaos incarnate. There is no law here, no structure, no civility, no God. The inmates have free reign so long as they stay within the Arkham City walls.

    Tyger Mercenaries
These ruthless men and women are here for one reason and one reason alone: To keep all hell from spilling out of Arkham and into the general public. They're armed, they're dangerous and they definitely shoot first. Fuck the questions.

    Criminals
These are the poor, unlucky souls who really get the brunt of things. Whether you were holding up a grocery store so you could feed your family, or you were caught breaking parole, or you were dealing drugs --if you were locked up in Blackgate for it you're stuck with the crazies now. Good luck.

    Villains & the Criminally Insane
The biggest reason Arkham City was formed. If you were transferred from Arkham Asylum, then you're in this category. These are the high rollers, the big bads, the people you don't want piss off. Nearly all of Batman's rogues gallery falls into this category. Oh, and hey! The mercenaries have a pool going on who'll successfully appoint them self mayor first. My money's on Two-Face.

    Homecoming: War of the Demigods
    A multi-fandom RPG of mythology

    The History

If the gods have ever been known as one thing, it is fickle. Fickle in favor, fickle in tastes… Fickle in love. For years beyond time may tell, the gods have moved from mortal love to mortal love, with nary a thought of the consequences, and often without a care for immortal partners. Thus, in ancient times, under the rule of the gods, it was not unknown to hear tell of strange pregnancies that gave birth to extraordinary individuals; children of gods and mortals who possessed astonishing powers and could commit amazing feats. These children were known as demigods, and stories were told, songs were sung, of their deeds.

    Then everything changed.

The people were slow to notice. After all, they had many songs to sing, many stories to tell, and these demigods, these great heroes, were proof of the gods’ favor. Years passed, and as the very nature of the half god was a mortal one, heroes began to die. It was not until the last demigod passed into the underworld that anyone realized that no more had been born to the world. The dalliances of the gods continued, yet those whom became pregnant mysteriously disappeared.

The people began to lose faith.

Years, centuries, millennia have passed since those times when mankind still worshiped the gods. Humanity has evolved far past such arcane beliefs; the gods have been resigned to naught but mythology and legend. The old arts of magic are long forgotten, and instead science leads the way into a new era, and era which will change everything. For science… Science has rediscovered the oldest of myths.

Science reaches beyond the mortal realm, beyond the limited scope of mankind’s own sight, and touches the eternal. And in this rush of discovery, of newfound knowledge of old truths about the gods, something else has returned as well.

    The demigods have come home.
    The Return

Zeus, king of the gods, has always been a jealous god. It was upon his order, an order made out of fear, that demigods, children born of god and mortal, were gathered upon birth and sent away. Zeus feared for his power, feared what might happen to the gods if the demigods rebelled against them; this was why he had these children scattered among many, many different worlds than the earth he and the gods ruled. They were sent far, far away, given to these different worlds with no knowledge of who, or what, they were.

Now, it is by Zeus’ order that these same demigods are being gathered upon earth once more. He has sent Hermes, messenger of the gods, to gather them, to bring them home, for their power is needed. There is war being made upon the gods, by the very mortals who once worshipped them, and Zeus knows that it might well be the power of the demigods that will win the battle against the technology the mortals wield.

    The Game Mechanics

Homecoming: War of the Demigods is a multi-fandom game that accepts original characters, and has its roots in Greek mythology. Playable in-game characters are demigods- individuals with one mortal parent and one god parent- that have been sent to another world to grow up and are now being recalled to earth, as well as mythological intelligent creatures in the gods’ employ.

Demigod characters should be completely oblivious about their heritage until they are contacted by Hermes and taken back to earth. Once on earth, demigods will have the choice of staying in the homes provided for them upon Olympus, or if they are daring, they may make an escape to the mortal realm. Whichever way they choose, it will soon become obvious that the mortals making war on the gods are doing so in a bid for power, and in an attempt to prove that they can best the gods.

    Musings
The essence of our stories has always existed.

In the world nearest to ours, there is a population of people, growing yet eternal and immortal, who spring from us - from our imaginations, from the seed of creativity that is the new existence of a definitive fictional character. You won't find replicas there, for the movement between planes is a changing thing, and you'll need to delve deep for the essence of our originals in Musings.

In Seattle, a one-way portal between planes has allowed these beings to filter into societies all over earth, where they live mortal lives and find fulfillment in the power this world offers - however short the time to enjoy it. Rumors in Musings abound, telling of generations making lives here... and the exodus has begun.

Equipped with supernatural abilities that do not exist in our world, the Creations (as they call themselves) find new challenges here. Among the immigrants there are those who wish to use their abilities for power and control of others; those who wish to defend the race they have joined, powerless though humans are; and those who would prefer to live their own lives in this new promised land.

Don't believe everything you read, but have an open mind. Sometimes, even comic books tell the truth about the world we live in, mostly those about...vampires. Don't believe me huh? That's to bad. You could be saving your own life if you knew how. If I knew now, what I did back then, my brother would still be a human. Well that's probably not a true statement, because knowing what I know now, well we still would have gone after David and his boys, and in the end, David would have still ruined my life. You see I'm a surfboard shaper but my true calling is devoted to something that is a little more unbelievable. My name's Edgar Frog and I hunt vampires.

For Truth, Justice and the American Way.

My story's not an easy one to hear, but I know that's not the reason why you're here anyway. You're here because of the odd happenings that are going around in Luna Bay. You see, I thought it was all over when I helped the Emerson's once again. Taking out Shane and destroying the Tribe should have been one of the few acts I was left to do, but I thought wrong. It seems that The Tribe wasn't he only vampire gang in Luna Bay and the head vampire of this game has pretty much everything going for him. He's got devoted minons and good looks. It's easy for him to draw people in. As much as I dislike the idea of turning to Alan, of needing his help to save the town again, I'm not sure I can get past the pain of knowing that Alan's a vampire because I failed to save him.

But I must, because I don't have a choice in the matter. Two of the people I saved, they are in the same boat. Younger siblings that were taken. I am not sure if we will get to them in time, but we will get to them. Hunting is not an easy job, it's not a walk in the park. You need the skills and the weapons. That's where I come in.

    PAPERCLIQUES

Oh, it's a common topic that's been visited a dozen times before. You and I both know the drill! School is where cliques form and the survival of the fittest is taken into a twisted mentality. Its where drama is sparked on every individual day. Well, here there is no dramatic happening in these teens' lives which make them all bond together. There's nothing that makes them suddenly fall in love. They aren't trapped in a house together. They aren't forced to be around each other. Really, there's nothing to cement these kids with one another. However, they're united by a single characteristic. They each belong to cliques. They each find it difficult to break free from the boundaries they created for themselves, yet...they need only remember that cliques are paper thin.

when humanity imagines something en masse different things can come from it; religion, contemplation, stories. what humanity doesn't know is that in large groups they have the ability to create almost anything, and this fact has been protected and will be protected until judgement day. because what humanity doesn't know WILL hurt them unless there's something done about it.

that's where perrault comes in. humanity's secret ability to create has made monsters of myth and legend come to life. each generation a child is born not knowing that they in fact are the vessel, the incarnation of a different mythological creature. or they don't know until they wake up one morning with horns or scales, or whatever. and they're a liability to the rest of humanity should they remain amongst humans without learning to control what they are. so they're brought to perrault from all corners of the earth to live amongst other kids like them and eventually grow into adults who'll use their gifts responsibly.

A boarding school RPG with a literary twist.

    RULESFAQAPPLICATIONCURRENT CASTTHE TOWNLOWOODMOD JOURNAL
The school of Lowood in the tiny town of Castalian Springs is an intensely private school hidden away near the West Coast. However, what appears to be simply a high-class boarding school is much more than that. There is something unusual about the students and staff of this school—each of them is the reincarnated soul of a long-dead author. There's more to the game than this, though; for some time literary apparitions have been appearing in the Springs, in the form of characters, places, and items straight from the original stories of these authors.

As the fictional world collides with the real world, the students of Lowood are required to divide their time between sorting out their relationship status, avoiding the teeth of Dracula, and finishing their homework assignments on time.

This RPG is well-established and has a lively community of friendly players—and talented writers to boot. Play is most frequently done through IM, and the game has plenty of room for your own plot ideas and development with literary apparitions. Questions, if not answered by the links above, can be directed to castalianmods@gmail.com.

Maybe you should join the force, huh?

Welcome to Obsidian City where the sun never shines, the crime never sleeps and love never dies.

A dark city in all sense of the word, Obsidian City is lucky to see one day of sunshine. If the city is dark at night, it isn't much better during the day. Too much smog and cloud blocks out the half decent light that struggles in between the skyscrapers. People make do though, possibly a little angrier than those who live under the undivided sun, a little more miserable, a little more hopeless. This is no city for the weak, and it certainly isn't a tourist hot-spot.

Obsidian City was never a shining city on the hill, it was built and born as if already crumbling down. Beneath the heavy, dark clouds that rarely seem to let up, lies a sprawling mecca of theft, corruption and greed. It really is no wonder that in such sunlight starved streets, there is little light to be had in the city’s inhabitants. Each jewel-named district hardly lives up to its name: The Ruby District, a self-sufficient community of its own, ruled by whores, who are the law. The rich are safely tucked away in The Onyx Towers, far from their poorer brethren, the utterly impoverished who languish in the Ivory Narrows.

Outside of The Ruby District, where the only laws are their laws, it is not the oft corrupt and always under funded police force that holds the most sway in the run of Obsidian City. No, the city is divided up and controlled by three major crime families, in close environs that seem to speak of a constant threat of war between two or more of the ruling families.

The Russians led by the Petrovskii Family, from their base of operations, Duma, an upscale nightclub known for its beautiful women and for the illegal deals made in dark back rooms, lord over the Diamond District. The Irish led by the O'Donnell Family, from the Irish pub that the first O'Donnell to come to America founded, long ago, loud and busy and full of their history, control the Emerald District. The Italians led by the Pavoni Family, from their Italian family restaurant in the center of the Topaz district, and come with as much flourish and ceremony in both their illegal deeds and their lifestyle.

The Families are not the only ones that the populace should fear, as there have been recent whispers that there is a serial killer preying upon the inhabitants of the city, lurking in the shadows and bringing death with them.

As if the population of Obsidian City didn't have enough on their plate, they now need to look over their shoulder at every step.

    And so do you.

William McKinley High School. In 1993, the Glee Club had just won Nationals. They had the world at their feet. They ruled the school. They couldn't have been considered cooler.

But now, it's 2010 and though they've won Sectionals, .it's been a long time since the Glee Club was considered anything close to "cool." Now they're the bottom of the heap, the misfits of the school. No one has faith in them at all...but one man: Spanish teacher, Will Schuester. He basked in the glow of the '93 Glee Club and wants to return it to its former glory. Unfortunately, there are dark forces plotting against this grand scheme...namely, cheerleaders. Will the "gleeks" triumph or crash and burn? Only time will tell...

By its very definition, Glee is about opening yourself up to joy.

New Directions is the oldest Glee RPG on IJ and has been open for play since September.
